American Cockroach

Large, 1.5 to 2 inches long, with a reddish-brown body. They have a distinctive yellowish figure-8 pattern on the shield behind the head. Adults have fully developed wings and can fly in warm conditions. They have long antennae.

Nocturnal and fast-moving. They prefer warm, dark, and humid areas. They can fly short distances when temperatures are high. They are omnivorous and will eat almost anything organic, including paper, hair, and dead insects.

Sewers, basements, crawl spaces, and around plumbing fixtures. They enter homes through drains, sewer pipes, and gaps under doors. They prefer temperatures above 70°F with high humidity.

Large dark droppings (resembling mouse droppings but blunt-ended) in basements and near drains. Egg cases (oothecae) that are dark brown and about 3/8 inch long. A strong, musty odor. Seeing live roaches, especially at night in bathrooms and basements.

They can trigger allergies and asthma. They spread bacteria including Salmonella, E. coli, and other pathogens by contaminating food and surfaces. Their shed skins and droppings can cause allergic reactions.

Keep drains covered with screens. Seal gaps around pipes and under doors. Eliminate moisture sources — fix leaks and improve ventilation. Keep food in sealed containers. Clean up crumbs and spills. Remove cardboard and clutter.
