Appearance

Adults are reddish-brown, oval, and flattened, about 3/16 inch long — similar to an apple seed. After feeding, they become swollen and darker red. Nymphs are smaller and translucent.

Behavior

Nocturnal feeders that hide during the day in tiny cracks near sleeping areas. They are attracted to body heat and carbon dioxide. They can survive months without a blood meal.

Habitat

Mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, headboards, and nightstands. In heavy infestations, they spread to baseboards, electrical outlets, behind wallpaper, and in furniture joints.

Signs of Infestation

Itchy red bites on skin, often in lines or clusters. Small dark fecal spots (looks like ink dots) on sheets, mattresses, or walls. Tiny blood stains on bedding. Shed skins and eggshells in crevices. A sweet, musty odor in heavy infestations.

Health Risks

Bites cause itchy welts and can lead to secondary skin infections from scratching. They can cause anxiety, sleep deprivation, and allergic reactions. They do not transmit diseases but significantly impact quality of life.

Prevention Tips

Inspect hotel rooms before unpacking. Keep luggage off the floor. Wash and dry clothes on high heat after traveling. Inspect used furniture before bringing it inside. Use encasements on mattresses and box springs. Reduce clutter around the bed.
