Black Widow Spider

Glossy jet-black body with a distinctive red or orange hourglass-shaped marking on the underside of the abdomen. Females are about 1.5 inches including legs; males are much smaller and lighter in color.

Nocturnal and reclusive. They build irregular, tangled webs in dark, undisturbed areas. They typically hang upside down in their web and only bite when threatened or accidentally pressed against skin.

Dark, dry, undisturbed areas such as woodpiles, garages, sheds, crawl spaces, meter boxes, and outdoor furniture. Common in Southern California's desert and suburban environments.

Irregular cobweb-style webs in corners, near ground level, or in sheltered outdoor spots. Egg sacs that appear as small, round, tan or gray silken balls in the web. Seeing the spiders themselves in dark areas.

Their venom contains a neurotoxin that can cause severe muscle pain, cramps, nausea, sweating, and elevated blood pressure. Bites require prompt medical attention, especially for children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

Reduce clutter in garages and storage areas. Wear gloves when reaching into dark spaces or handling firewood. Seal cracks and gaps around your home's foundation. Keep vegetation trimmed away from the house. Regularly clean and dust dark corners.
