Aedes aegypti
Small flying insects that feed on human blood and are vectors for several diseases. In Southern California, they are active year-round but peak in warm months. Standing water is the key breeding ground.
Appearance
Slender body, 1/8 to 1/4 inch long, with long legs and delicate wings. The Aedes aegypti species has distinctive white stripes on its legs and a lyre-shaped pattern on its thorax.
Behavior
Most active during dawn and dusk, though Aedes species also bite during the day. Females require a blood meal to produce eggs. They breed in any standing water, even tiny amounts in containers.
Habitat
Near standing water — birdbaths, flower pots, gutters, old tires, and any container that holds water. They rest in cool, shaded vegetation during the heat of the day.
