Oriental Cockroach
Blatta orientalis
Dark, slow-moving cockroaches that thrive in cool, damp environments. Also known as water bugs or black beetles, they are less common in homes than German or American roaches but can be a persistent problem in damp areas.
Appearance
About 1 to 1.25 inches long, with a shiny dark brown to black body. Females have very small wing pads; males have short wings that cover about half the abdomen. Neither sex can fly. They have a broader, rounder body than other cockroach species.
Behavior
Slow-moving and less skittish than other roach species. They prefer cool, damp environments and are most active at night. They feed on decaying organic matter, garbage, and filth. They cannot fly but can move quickly when disturbed.
Habitat
Damp, dark areas: under sinks, in basements, crawl spaces, near drains, and around plumbing. Outdoors they hide under mulch, leaf litter, and stones. They prefer temperatures between 68-72°F.

Dark droppings (irregular in shape) in damp areas. Egg cases that are dark reddish-brown and about 1/2 inch long. A strong, musty odor. Dead roaches found in basements or near drains. Seeing live roaches in bathrooms and kitchens at night.

They spread bacteria and pathogens from drains and sewers to food and surfaces. They can trigger allergies and asthma. Their preference for filth makes them a significant contamination risk.
